Dear Maidencombe ResidentIt’s been a busy few months since the last update, and as promised here are a few highlights and future plans. The annual Maidencombe Village Fete took place in sweltering temperatures on Sunday 22 July on the green by the Thatched Tavern. With the added bonus of a free car park for the day, we had a good number of visitors who ate the burgers, threw the eggs, tugged the ropes, and joined the MP and local councillor in the stocks! As always, the dog show was a huge success – well done Ben on winning Best in Show! We raised £311.25 for Rowcroft Hospice and the same amount going towards Maidencombe projects. The barn dance to finish was huge fun and once again an enormous thank you to everyone involved. We have set up a small free library of books in the snug at the pub – why not settle down for a read with a coffee – take a book or leave a book for others to enjoy.
Friday 10th August saw a beach clean including cutting back the nettles etc on the steps. We collected 5 bags of assorted rubbish plus 2 chairs and some disposable BBQs. Most concerning aside from the plastic was the amount of fishing tackle and hooks.
Sunday 19th August saw the village green in use again for Boules/Petanque competitions. Not many of us had a clue, but it was still great fun and those who had played before proved good teachers! So looking ahead, why not collect a bag or two of apples from the orchard or your garden and join us for Apple Day on 15th September. Bring containers for your crushed juice & then enjoy or wait for the cider to ferment! Saturday 13 October is the date for the next Safari Supper. You can offer a starter, main course or desert and it’s a great chance to meet new people and have a really good evening. It’s very informal and you don’t have to be Jamie Oliver or Delia – just come and join the fun.
Our next quiz will be at the Thatched Tavern on Halloween! Wednesday 31 October. All contributions for the raffle very much appreciated as usual.
Lastly, on Saturday 17 November, we are planning is a 60 / 70s Night at the Thatched Tavern. So – have a look at the back of your wardrobe and find those flares and miniskirts etc and come and sing and dance along to the songs we all loved! I’m told that there might be karaoke and we are looking at an optional menu from “back in the day” to tickle your taste buds! On-going projects include the saving of the beautiful, if currently rather sad, Beach Cafe. We are looking at a number of possible options to save this iconic piece of Maidencombe from demolition and would welcome your thoughts and ideas. Please get behind us on this as it would be tragic to lose such an asset to our village. I will keep you updated on our progress. These are just some of the areas where the Maidencombe Residents Association has been active over the summer months, and I would like to say a huge thanks to everyone for their support and hard work. If you are not already a member, why not join us?
Very Best wishes Chris Davies
