As 2019 draws to a close, I wanted to say thank you to all those who have helped make this a really good year for Maidencombe.
To round off the year, there will be a 24 hour Carolathon at St Andrew’s church in Stokeinteignhead 3pm 13th to 3pm 14thDecember. If, like me, your singing is probably best confined to the shower or car, PLEASE don’t let that deter you from joining in and supporting this event. Why not get a group of friends together and make it a real Christmas event? Refreshments will be provided.
Looking forward, we are thinking about a Safari Supper towards the end of January, but need to have viable numbers. You do NOT need to be a super star chef; it’s about getting together, having fun and enjoying making new friends. Please let me know if you would like to sign up or want more information.
Following the kitchen fire & sale of the Thatched Tavern, we are now looking forward to the re-opening in the springtime. The pub is a vital part of our community and I know we are all looking forward to welcoming the new owners and supporting them in bringing the Thatched Tavern back to the village.
On the subject of food and drinks, if you have not already been to the newly opened Jam Shed, why not go and treat yourself.
As you will know, the Neighbourhood Plan has been adopted for Torbay and will be an effective tool to protect the wonderful place that we call home. Sadly in recent months, there have been occasions when the Local Plan has been overridden to accommodate the pressures from large developers, such as the Corbyn Head Hotel. Whatever your views on development, it surely cannot be right that large corporations can bulldoze the wishes of the residents of Torbay in the name of their own profit.
Any new year brings its challenges, and I am sure that 2020 will be no different. For over a year now we have been dealing with the planning application for a Care Village on Sladnor Park. The seven x 10 storey tower blocks which they are looking to build would overwhelm our beautiful village and the drainage expert at Torbay Council has confirmed that serious flooding will occur if the permission to build this is granted. We will keep you informed as to the progress of the application, but would urge you to look at the arguments already on line on the council’s planning portal reference P/2018/1053.If you have not already written in to the planning department, you can easily do so on line. I think it’s important to say that the Resident’s Association are not against development per se, but will not support the wrong development in the wrong place. Just one example of why this is not an appropriate site is the view from the police that a 1.8 – 2 metre perimeter fence should be erected around the whole of Sladnor Park to protect vulnerable residents.
As Christmas shopping becomes more frenetic, don’t forget to make use of your MRA Discount Card when shopping locally and supporting our local businesses.
